President of India calls for energy conservation


President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Friday called for the adoption of energy-saving measures and suggested that all Raj Bhavans engage the services of the Energy Service Company for the same.

Presenting the Energy Conservation Awards at the Vigyan Bhavan here, Ms. Patil reaffirmed the government’s commitment towards sustainable development and inclusive growth by using the precious energy resources effectively and wisely.

Citing the successful conservation effort at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, she said that the scope for energy savings in large buildings should be explored and measures implemented to achieve these savings within a time frame.

Praising the efforts of industry, Ms. Patil exhorted the public sector to take the lead in this important national effort. She congratulated the children who took part in the National Energy Conservation painting competition.

She stressed on the need to inculcate in the future citizens the importance of energy conservation.

The function was organised by the Ministry of Power on the occasion of the National Energy Conservation Day.Union Minister of Power Sushil Kumar Shinde was present.

The awards were given to 42 outstanding industrial units, buildings and zonal railways in recognition of their commitment to energy conservation and efficiency.

These units collectively invested Rs.2,923 crore in conservation measures.

Mr. Shinde said shortages of 15,000 to 16,000 MW could be overcome by practicing conservation and efficiency.
